A new leadership for the Spanish Institute of Building Biology (IEB)

13.05.2025

The IEB (Instituto Espanol de Baubiologie) is a partner institute of the IBN. Since 2009 it has been the leading institution for building biology in Spain, offering a master’s degree in building biology based on the translated Building Biology Course IBN, as well as ongoing lectures, seminars, and exhibitions in collaboration with the University of Lleida. In 2023 Silvia de Santos and Miguel Martínez de Morentin took over from Petra Jebens-Zirkel, the founder and long-time director of the IEB.

How would you describe the main goals of the IEB?

Through our master’s program and seminars, we want to provide participants with the keys they need to build and renovate according to the following criteria:

  • Respect for human needs, especially human health
  • Energy efficiency and self-sufficiency
  • Respect for the environment: use of non-toxic and local materials
  • Promotion of humane and environmentally friendly living spaces

What is most important to you for the future of the IEB?

We will continue the work of Petra, her husband Alfred, and all the other members of the IEB who have contributed to the pioneering work. On this basis, we want to give the IEB a fresh perspective. We have been part of the IEB team for many years. In addition to a quality education, many students are looking for a place where they can continue to grow as people and professionals, and where human needs are a priority.

How does the IEB work with the IBN?

The relationship is very close. For us, the IBN is our point of reference (after nature!). The IBN is like a mother: we feel supported and cared for. We are in constant communication and see this as an advantage for both institutions. We share many values and this brings us closer together.
